JACK

My phone vibrates in my pocket. I haven’t looked at it all night, and don’t want to start now. It buzzes a second time and she looks down to my trouser pocket and asks, “Aren’t you going to check that?”

I reluctantly pull it from my pocket, spotting two texts from my cousin, Ben, and my brother, Cameron.

Ben

Drinks on me when you’re back. Happy Birthday.

Cam

Happy birthday, you old fart.

I show her the message previews on my home screen.

“12:01. Officially 40. Happy birthday,” she says with a sweet smile. “We should celebrate.” She stands quickly and offers her hand. “Need help up, old man?”

“Fucking hell, I’m not that old,” I laugh, taking her hand. I pull her down to sit sideways on my lap and wrap my arms around her. “Where do two old people celebrate here in New York?”

“I know just the place.”
